Upstream kernel (since v4.13-rc1) includes a new kernel module for
Thunderbolt. This new driver uses a new architecture and the
communication to user-space is very different from what it was (sysfs
and uevents instead of the Netlink interface previously used).
As part of the change, the daemon isn't needed anymore and the
libtbtfwu (from fwupdate branch you linked to) isn't relevant either
(as it used to connect to the daemon).
The new code in master includes new tools for handling the device
approval and FW update is supported by a new fwupd plugin.
More information about the new driver can be found in kernel
