Using syncEvo's HTTP server, I have managed to synch using the file
backend. Now I am looking for options to synch that data with
Thunderbird. TB doesn't have direct support for SyncML, though
Funambol have an extension (compatible with TB3) that claims to be
compliant with any SyncML device:

I thought I'd give it a go, the results being:
syncevo-dbus-server:

Well, I managed to sync with Thunderbird 2 (2.0.0.24) with that
extension with the syncevo server, on the same machine and with the
addressbook data in Evolution. I don't actually know if syncing
calendar or todos should work for Lightning with that Funambol
extension? But Calendar and Tasks are greyed out in the Funambol
config, so I guess not. Haven't tried with TB3 either so far.
There were some problems with phone numbers and email addresses, since
TB seems fairly restrictive about those, but otherwise things went
well. There was a hint somewhere to use a separate address book for
syncing, so I did that.

That's surprising. application/vnd.syncml+xml should be a valid message
type.
Can you run "dbus-monitor" to capture the "Connect" and
"Process" D-Bus
method calls?
Are you sure syncevo-dbus-server is the one you compiled yourself? You
are using 1.0, right?

Ah, that explains it. I hadn't noticed earlier that the charset is part
of the content type.
The "; charset=UTF-8" suffix breaks a too strict string comparison in
syncevo-dbus-server. Now tracked as
http://bugs.meego.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3554
In the meantime, patching the syncevo-http-server will be faster than
recompiling syncevo-dbus-server. The attached patch should do the trick.

In the meantime, patching the syncevo-http-server will be faster
than
recompiling syncevo-dbus-server. The attached patch should do the trick.
Great! That seems to have done the trick. I was a good moment when my
~300 calendar entries and ~100 contacts appeared in Thunderbird.
However, upon further inspection, I've noticed a few compatibility nuances:
1. (UTF?) characters such as "£" are not synched correctly: the
"unknown character" question mark appears in both TB and my phone and
on each synch, duplicate entries are added. Perhaps the patch effected
this?
2. Thunderbird does not support all the address book fields I use on
my phone (such as multiple number fields and additional email address
fields). I was expecting some inconsistencies in this area from
synching to Google via a TB extension (I might adopt a SyncML approach
now if I can get it working).
3. In todo's on the phone, the text within an item appears to be
duplicated. It seems both the description and summary are being
displayed (their content is the same in the vcal file).
Could you offer any advice on these? I would assume it requires more
configuration.

No, I don't think so. UTF-8 is the default for vCard 3.0 and iCalendar
2.0, regardless of what the encapsulating XML says.
Can you reduce it to a simpler combination of syncs, say, add special
character in FB, send to server, then to phone?
Check at each step that the data was transfered okay. The data stored by
the file backend uses UTF-8.
Regarding the duplicates, does that occur during a normal two-way sync?
If in doubt, identify one sync which shouldn't create duplicates but
does and post the server-side sync log, either publicly or to me
directly.
2. Thunderbird does not support all the address book fields I use on

fields). I was expecting some inconsistencies in this area from
synching to Google via a TB extension (I might adopt a SyncML approach

Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about this. Picking the
subset of the data which is supported by all devices typically works
best.
