Right, thanks for pointing this out. I have changed the description. I
removed one whole paragraph which was meant to explain this, but stems
from times before the Synthesis engine and wasn't clear enough:
Sending and receiving items in the same format as used by the server for
the uri selected below is essential. Normally, SyncEvolution and the server
negotiate the preferred format automatically. With some servers, it is
necessary to change the defaults (vCard 2.1 and iCalendar 2.0), typically
because the server does not implement the format selection or the format
itself correctly.

Added:
When there are alternative formats for the same data,
each side offers all that it supports and marks one as
preferred. The other side then picks the format that it
uses for sending data. Some peers get confused by this or
pick the less suitable format. In this case the trailing
exclamation mark can be used to configure exactly one format.
