It's what the MeeGo Netbook designers wanted to have for MeeGo. I agree
that this slight tongue-in-cheek style may not be appropriate for other
distros, but I'm not sure how to solve this.
Hmm, sync-gtk.desktop.in is the file installed outside of MeeGo. I
suppose we could modify that file without affecting MeeGo.
I honestly fail to understand what MeeGo designers had in mind... but
anyway, yes, I guess the one you suggest would be a good solution.

So what do you suggest?
[Desktop Entry]
_Name=SyncEvolution (GTK)
_Comment=Synchronize PIM data
Maybe without "(GTK)" - in the end, launchers are for graphic apps, and
the particular library used is not something the average user is
particularly interested in.
If you feel that there is need to avoid possible future ambiguity, maybe
"for Gnome" would be scrictly speaking less appropriate, but more
understandable.
By the way: now that syncevolution works also without any third-party
server, I guess the category "network" is not very appropriate, and I
would replace it with
"Utility;GTK"
or
"Office;PDA;GTK"
