The client can be built from source for any kernel* up to 4.2 (lustre 2.8)
and Lustre 2.9 I believe was patched to work with newer kernels but we
haven't tested yet.
* not quite any, you probably need at least kernel 2.6.X but that is still
almost any kernel released in the past few years.

The Lustre 2.8.0 release was only built with CentOS 7.2, and AFAIK
are a number of patches needed to build against CentOS 7.3 which are
included in the Lustre 2.9.0 release.
